NætrFossavatn: even more recent information

English below

There are now just over two days to start in Nætrfossavatin. At the moment the weather forecast is unfortunately not exactly what we would have liked it to be, but we will continue to monitor developments and release further details tomorrow lunchtime, Friday.

However, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce some minor changes to the arrangement of the walk. Please read the updated text below.

NætrFossavatnid - updated information.

The competition starts at 18:00 and then we will enter the evening and the night. The lighting in the ski area will be turned off, but the participants will bring their own headlamps.

This is a team-competition, with each team consisting of two skiers (regardless of age or gender) who ski the entire distance together and must cross the finish line within 15 seconds of each other.

Price will be handed out for the first 3 women and first 3 men in both categories 35 km and 70 km The race is freestyle (you can choose whether to skate or us classical style). You´re allow to change style in the race but you can only bring 1 extra par with you. We'll transport extra luggages/skis at the drinking station in the course (see here below)

The 70 km course: Start at the ski hut on Seljalandsdal. First, one "loop" is walked and then the path goes up to Háubrún (same start as the Fossavatnsgånginn). There you first take a short loop (1.6 km in the area between Sandfellslyft and the bend into Alsgaard bend) and then a longer loop is walked 9 times (7.25 km loop around Brúnir and Eiríksmýri, you do NOT come down to the lower area between). At the end, you go back down to the cabin and to the finish line. Competitors themselves are responsible for counting the laps correctly, but an intermediate station will be located on Háubrún.

The 35 km course: Start at the ski hut on Seljalandsdal. First, a 3.3 km loop is completed in the lower area, but then the same route as the 70 km hike up Háubrún is followed. Up there in the upper area, you walk four laps (7.25 km each, you do NOT descend to the lower area in between) and finally come back down to the cabin and to the finish line. Competitors themselves are responsible for counting the laps correctly, but an intermediate station will be located on Háubrún.

Note that participants take care of their own drinks and other snacks. The luggage will be transported on a sled from the start and to a luggage compartment at the track in the 7.25 km circle. People can then stop there to feed themselves (or switch between skating and traditional equipment) when needed. After the race, the luggage will be ferried back down to the finish area, but you may have to wait a bit for that transfer.

It will be possible to store dry clothes at the Ski Lodge. There we'll offer you a soup/bread/chocolate for all participants.

Registration is still open.

As we approach the date for the first ever NighFossavatn, the weather forecast is not as favorable as we would have wanted. We are still monitoring the situation and expect to receive a new and reliable forecast around noon tomorrow. We will then immediately make an announcement about whether we will be able to go ahead with the event as planned or if we have to cancel/delay it.

The NightFossavatn – a few things to keep in mind:

The NightFossavatn is a team event. Each team consists of two skiers (all ages and genders race together). The team must ski the course together and not be more than 15 seconds apart when they cross the finish line.

The floodlights will be turned off at the ski area, so the skiers need to use their own headlamps.

Distances: 70 km and 35 km. Both skiers on each team must ski the full distance.

You are free to use the classic or skating technique. It is also allowed to change technique during the race, but please bring only one pair of skis (and other equipment) for each technique. Your skis will be transported to the luggage area for you (see below).

The 70 km course: Start at 18:00 in front of the ski hut at Seljalandsdalur. After around 2 km you come up to the upper plateau where you will first do a small loop, 1.6 km, and then nine bigger loops (7.25 km each) before heading back down to the finish area (same as the start area) to complete the race.

The 35 km course: Start at 18:00 in front of the ski hut at Seljalandsdalur. First you finish a 3.3 km loop before climbing up to the upper plateau where you will ski four loops of 7.25 km. Finally you come back down to the finish area (same as the start area) to complete the race.

Skiers must provide their own drinks and nutrition. Your luggage will be transported for you from the start and up to a luggage area on the higher plateau (in the 7.25 km loop). During the race you can stop there to eat and drink (and change between classic and skating equipment) as often as you prefer. After the race your luggage will be transported back to the finish area, but please note that there might be a little wait for it, though.

You can also store a bag with dry clothes in the ski hut at the start/finish area. Soup and bread will be on offer for you in the ski hut when you finish the race.

Registration is still open.
